Product Overview

State-of-the-art optical and image stabilizing technologies combine to create a new masterwork lens in the 90mm Macro.
Images of astounding sharpness, augmented by natural blur effects. Tamron’s classic 90mm Macro lens is reborn to let you shoot even more beautiful, exquisite images. Compatible with full-size SLR cameras, this new, high-resolution macro lens lets the photographer capture the moment’s atmosphere at will.

High resolution with beautiful blur effects
Two XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements(*1) made from specialized, high-grade glass and one LD (Low Dispersion) element are combined to thoroughly correct aberration. Moreover, the latest optical design and rounded diaphragm(*2) deliver a spectacular blur effect. This macro lens maintains sharp focus on the subject together with soft natural blurring of foregrounds and backgrounds to achieve a richer, deeper feel in the image.

New eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating
This new coating technique developed by Tamron deploys a nano-structured layer (1nm = 1/1,000,000mm) of ultra-low refractive index, with dimensions smaller than the wavelengths of visible rays of light. This nano-structured layer coupled with the sophisticated multiple layer coatings underneath, yields significant anti-reflection properties, efficiently reducing undesired flare and ghosting to an absolute minimum to deliver sharp, crisp images.

VC (Vibration Compensation)(*3)
This macro lens is equipped with the VC mechanism that delivers sharp and vivid viewfinder images. Even in low-light situations, camera shake is reduced to enable stress-free hand-held photography.

1:1 Maximum magnification ratio
The maximum magnification ratio of the new 90mm Macro is 1:1, which lets you reproduce a life-size image of the subject on the image sensor. This lens is suited to close-up photography of small objects, enabling the photographer to capture the minute world that otherwise would be missed when viewed just by the naked eye.

IF(Internal Focusing)System
The lens incorporates the IF system, which focuses by moving only the internal lens group. The overall length of the lens therefore does not change when focusing, thus ensuring a broad working distance. As a result, comfortable macro shooting is enabled.

Moisture-resistant construction
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.

USD(Ultrasonic Silent Drive)
The quiet high-torque USD motor ensures a speedy and accurate autofocus response.

Full-time manual focus
Fine focus adjustments using manual focus can be made during autofocus shooting, without the need to change focus mode.

Tamron Di lenses designed for digital SLR cameras.

*1 The XLD glass has much lower dispersion, similar to fluorite, than the conventional LD element.
*2 This rounded diaphragm retains a nearly circular shape even when taken two stops down from its fully open state.
*3 From 3m, the benefits of VC gradually decrease as the focus distance becomes closer.

Recommended for APS-C photographers who…

- Desire a 1:1 macro with image stabilization technology
- Desire prime lens characteristics
- Need top-notch close-up performance

Super Performance for Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.

Vibration Compensation

Vibration Compensation
Tamron’s Unique State-of-the-Art In-Lens Image Stabilization System: Handheld camera shake is the leading cause of blurry and unsharp pictures. Several leading companies now make lenses with built-in optical image-stabilization systems that sense the amplitude and direction of the shake and compensate by moving optical groups within the lens. Tamron’s exclusive new Vibration Compensation (VC) system that’s built into the Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro and the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lenses performs a similar function, but it executes it much more effectively due to its innovative breakthrough design.

90 VC diagram

While other image-stabilization systems can only correct the effects of camera shake in horizontal or vertical planes, Tamron’s VC system uses a tri-axial configuration that employs three pairs of driving coils and low-friction ball bearings placed around the shake-compensating optical group to produce, in effect, a free-floating shake compensator. This simple, elegant system is able to compensate for camera shake that occurs in diagonal direction as well as for up-and-down and side-to-side movements. Furthermore, due to its simple, low-friction design it is more responsive and durable than previous systems. The Tamron 28-300mm VC and 18-270mm VC lenses incorporate a highly sensitive and accurate gyro sensor for detecting even the slightest hand shake, and that, combined with a 32-bit RISC CPU and Tamron’s proprietary Algorithms and actuator, provides unequalled real-world performance. The bottom line: Tamron VC provides up to a 4-stop advantage in shooting sharp handheld pictures at slower shutter speeds along with a smooth, stable viewfinder image that is the envy of other shake-control systems. You can expect to see the VC feature built into more Tamron lenses in the future.

Ultrasonic Silent Drive

Ultrasonic Silent Drive
Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator.

90 VC USD

By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations that produced simple motion into energy known as ‘deflective traveling waves’, which then moves around the circumference (rotation direction) of the ring.

With the USD, the friction between these deflective traveling waves created on the metallic surface of the stator and the surface of the rotor produce force, causing the rotor to rotate. The focusing ring lens, which is linked to the rotor, is thus moved, creating a fast and smooth auto-focus drive.

Internal Focusing Internal Focusing (IF) System
Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.
Extra Low Dispersion

Extra Low Dispersion
Lens elements are made from specialized high-grade glass and have even more effective dispersive properties than LD elements. The result is a lens that delivers sharp contrast and better resolution.

The Risk of Purchasing Gray Market Products:
In looking for our products, you may find that products not supplied through our regular channel are sold in your market. Such products are generally called “gray-market products” and may involve quality problems.

Interchangeable lenses are precision optical and mechanical products. Therefore, if handling during transportation or storage is not adequate, defects or malfunctions may occur. As for our products supplied through our regular distribution channel, meticulous care is taken in transportation and storage in order to ensure quality protection. However, in the case of gray-market products, it is more likely that they are handled inadequately during transportation or storage; are exposed to undesirable conditions such as high temperatures, vibration, shock, high humidity, dust, dirt and so on; or that they have been mixed up with used products since they are not under our strict control. Therefore, we are unable to warrant the quality of gray-market products.

Always look for Tamron products that are supplied through our authorized distribution channel. By purchasing Tamron products from an authorized dealer, you can ensure the quality of the product, which will be also covered by Tamron USA's Six-Year Limited Warranty, the only warranty accepted by Tamron USA, Inc. in the USA as of October 1, 2007. To find an authorized Tamron dealer near you, please click here.

If you have any question as to the authenticity of a dealer or product, please do not hesitate to contact our Service Department at 1-800-827-8880, Option 1, to discuss your impending purchase.
