Gear and Lens Maintenance: Preparing for Winter Photography
Winter can be one of the most picturesque times to take photographs, but also one of the most difficult. Harsh temperatures and weather can damage cameras and lenses. To get the best shots and protect your equipment, you must be prepared for any weather conditions.

What Gear Should You Pack for Your Winter Photography Shoot?
Landscape photography and content creation in a winter wonderland can be immensely fun and relaxing with some planning. Typically, few cameras have issues operating below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and many claim full performance down to roughly 14 degrees Fahrenheit. However, there are growing indicators of cameras slowing in performance as the temperature drops. A lens with a focal length of 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 or 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 for DSLR cameras or 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 or 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 for mirrorless cameras are great places to start. These lenses allow you to zoom in on your subject while creating separation of the winter background.

At cold temperatures, batteries lose a significant amount of power. If the batteries become cold, they will normally regain power if warmed up again. When photographing outdoors, it is beneficial to bring two or three battery packs so you can switch the batteries out and keep them in a warm spot to extend their performance.
